The Fridge Door
Every family has a parliament. Ours is the fridge door. Nothing is official until a magnet is on it, and Mum's notes are the law because they are in capital letters and she writes them first.
from mum (capitals = law)
DINNER IS AT SIX. IF YOU ARE UP THAT TREE AT SIX, DINNER IS AT SIX WITHOUT YOU.
magnet: a strawberry
the shopping list
Milk, eggs, AA batteries (again — WHO is eating the batteries), rice, the nice biscuits (top shelf, you know why).
magnet: the letter B
from dad
Whoever used my screwdriver: it lives in the tin now. There was a vote. You lost.
magnet: 1994, a holiday we do not discuss
LOST
MY KITE. Green, diamond-shaped, tail like a ribbon. Last seen going over the roofs heading for the plum tree. It lives there now. Viewing only. ↗
magnet: a bottle cap
from me (damien)
The computer is MINE from 7 to 8. This has been agreed. The agreement is this note. The note is legally binding because it is on the fridge.
magnet: a dinosaur
school says
“Damien is a cheerful boy who must remember that homework is not optional.” — I have framed the note instead of doing the homework. This counts as engaging with feedback.
magnet: a gold star, peeling
from mum (addendum)
WHO MOVED THE BISCUIT TIN. The tin has a home. The home has a shelf. The shelf is high for a REASON.
magnet: a second strawberry
FOR SALE
One (1) little brother of a skateboard — no wait, FOR SALE: my old skateboard. One wheel is emotional. Two pounds or a trade involving batteries.
magnet: a football
the phone rota
MON: mum. TUE: dad (business). WED: ME (research). If the rota is violated, see the biscuit tin clause.
magnet: a tiny phone
snoopy corner (from me)
The Snoopy tape is NOT to be recorded over. The Christmas special is a historical document. Anyone taping football over it will answer to history, and to me.
magnet: a small dog
Fridge law, article one: a note covered by another note has been repealed. A note covered by TWO notes has been repealed and someone is in trouble. Choose your magnets carefully.
